When the sun starts to get higher in the sky and the days get longer, it's one of my favorite times of the year to be on the mountain. Spring skiing is here! Because the sun is getting more intense as spring arrives, here are a several tips that I like to share with my friends to ensure that they enjoy springtime on the mountain as much as I do:
- First off, be sure to put on good sunscreen, and if you're going to be out all day, be sure to re-apply. The sun is much more intense than you realize and the reflection off the snow is just like being out on a lake. It's a serious multiplier effect!
- Dress in layers. It can be cooler first thing in the morning than you might expect.
- Drink lots of fluids. The sun, altitude and our dry mountain air can quickly suck the moisture out of you.
- Follow the sun (I really keep coming back to the sun don't I?) around the mountain. It's always best to find runs that have just come into full sun exposure as they'll be softening up and perfect for epic spring carves.
I put together a few photos with some visual cues as to where I recommend riding and when. Check them out and leave a note in the comments section if you have any questions or additional suggestions. Enjoy!
