I Ride Park City: Episode 5

Welcome to February in Park City, all the parks are now open and everyone is all warmed up. Shaun White, Aaron Biittner, Mark Edlund, Scotty Arnold, Griffin Siebert, Matty Mo, and Kazuhiro Kokubo have been spotted shredding The Ridge, Three Kings and world famous Eagle Superpipe.

Mike Riddle and Ros Groenewoud Take Gold in World Halfpipe Championships

The FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships culminated in the world halfpipe finals taking place in our very own Eagle Superpipe. Blustery winds and snow made for less than ideal conditions, but world-class athletes can overcome and perform in any conditions. Many of the athletes commented that the weather was a challenge, however the larger goal of helping their sport progress to the Olympic level was reason enough to press on and step up to the challenge. At the end of the day Canada's Mike Riddle and Ros Groenewoud walked away with Gold medals and the title of World Champion. To read the full article click here.

Eagle Superpipe Now Open

The Eagle Superpipe is open and ready for action. Who will throw the first double corks of the season in the pipe? Who will be the first to go 20 feet out? Which mini-shreds will take their first ever pipe run? Stay tuned as we bring you all the action live (sort of) from the Eagle Superpipe.

We're proud to say that the US Snowboarding team will be training in the Eagle Superpipe from January 7-14 as well as many other podium topping athletes. Every year we see Shaun White, Louie Vito, Torah Bright and many others dialing in their winning moves right here. Not a bad view from the office window.

Our terrain park grooming supervisor and resident pipe builder and cutter, Tyson Goodrich has definitely outdone himself this year. She is a beauty. Cobra Dogs are Here

For the past few weeks there have been rumors about the possibility of Cobra Dogs coming to Park City. Well, let the talk cease, they're here!!! Starting tomorrow, December 28 at 11:00am, the all-natural hot dog, brats and veggie dogs that have been the staple of campers at High Cascade snowboard camp for six summers are coming to Park City Mountain Resort.

The Cobra Dogs trailer is parked at the base of the Eagle Superpipe, and Three Kings Terrain Park, just above the Eagle Lift,  and will be open daily from 11:00am-9:00pm through the end of the night riding season on March 27, 2011. In addition, stay tuned for details on the Cobra Dogs Grand Opening Party, including a night rail jam, on January 14, 2011. Who's up for a Cheddaconda "Cobra Style"? We are!

King of the Wasatch 2010 Video & Photos

Park City Mountain Resort hosted the King of the Wasatch at the Pick 'N Shovel Terrain Park and Eagle Superpipe on February 26th-28th. This event marked the finals of the Intermountain Snowboard Series.

Event Time

Once again, it's that time of year where we have a stacked upcoming event calendar.  We've added a few new events to the calendar and have some old favorites coming back as well.  The events calendar is pretty up to date, but check out below for a few details on what to expect over the next few weeks.

February 26-28 - King of the Wasatch

We've been hosting this event for a very long time.  This event is held in partnership with our friends at the Park City Snowboard Team.  This year we are adding a category for skiers and a rail jam!

Registration begins Monday at www.usasa.org.

Friday, February 26 - Skier Slopestyle in Pick'n Shovel and evening Rail Jam at the base of Pick.

Saturday, February 27 - Snowboard Slopestyle in Pick'n Shovel

Sunday, February 28 - Skier and Snowboard Superpipe

March 6 - SLUG Games "Beat the Pro"

We're excited to host a SLUG Games event this year.  Beat the Pro will bring Utah's finest unknown rippers up against some of our better known Utah pro's.

March 13 - Burton Chill Shredathon

Giving back is fun and makes you feel good!  We're hosting a fundraiser event for Burton's SLC-Chill program, on Saturday, March 13. A shredathon is sort of like a walkathon, except it's on snow and a mountain and you snowboard (skiers are welcome too).  Ok, maybe it's nothing like a walkathon, but you get people to pledge $$$ based on the number of vertical feet you ride.  We're putting together the details on this event right now, but as soon as they get confirmed I'll add to our events calendar and post here as well. 

March 27 - Queens Cup Open

Hard to believe the it's the 5th year of the Queens Cup Open! 

QCO is an all girls ski and snowboard event hosted by Park City Mountain Resort and present by K2 from March 26th-27th, 2010. We welcome all ladies of all ages to shred with the pros for a day and have the opportunity to win some great prizes as well as a chance to participate in My Super Sweet Park.

Olympic Training Grounds

*CONGRATS YOU FOUND THE LAST CLUE. **

It seems like this season, more and more Olympians are choosing to train at Park City Mountain Resort.  After naming the US team at the resort in January, the Norwegian, Swiss and Spanish halfpipe teams have been here the last few weeks.  Today, I caught up with them for a special favor.  Utah is lucky enough to be hosting Travelocity's Roaming Gnome this weekend.  The gnome is experiencing all the reasons why Utah is a great place to be.  We felt like the Gnome couldn't visit Utah without checking out our Parks and Pipe.  In true Swiss fashion, Sergio Berger stepped up to to show the Travelocity Roaming Gnome a few things in the pipe (some of the other riders weren't so excited for their moment of Gnome glory).  Sergio was awesome and willing to make sure the Travelocity folks got the shot! Here are a few shots we got of the Roaming Gnome.

Get Social

Sorry we've been slacking a little bit on the blogging these days.  We've were a little busy gearing up for the Grand Prix and then the wrap up that follows an event of that scale.  Thanks to all of you who came out to see the Eagle Superpipe graced with Olympic greatness.  We'll be cheering those guys on next month while they represent in Vancouver.  Go Team.

Jeremy and Crew have been busy prepping the pipe for the Grand Prix.  In the last few weeks they've also dozed Jonesy's and built a new park called The Ridge off the Eaglet chair...what's the Eaglet chair?  It's a chair we built for the Olympics, and it hasn't been used since the Games.  This summer the ops crew started talking about making it a park and well, now it is.  With "The Ridge" now open, Jonsey's has no longer a park.  Check it out.  It's a cool new way to experience the mountain.

Here's what I've learned from our facebook and twitter pages this morning -

Park City Parks and Pipes Pick and the Pipe are open again, there are 5 jumps, a box at the top, and 4 down rails; and it's supposed to be bluebird today (this is from yesterday), but it's going to be bluebird again today.

We've got a few weekends of downtime before we pick up the event madness again.  February 26-27 is the King of the Wasatch and March 6 we'll be hosting "Beat the Pro" with SLUG Magazine.  Check out our events calendar, for more details.

Olympians Named at Park City Mountain Resort

The Sprint US Snowboarding Grand Prix went off last weekend. Thanks to everyone who made it out to support the athletes and partake in the various festivities.  And if you didn’t make it out, here’s what you missed!
The two-day event started on Friday, January 22nd with round one of halfpipe competitions.  The snow let up long enough for Park City All-Star Shaun White to pull a double Mc twist out of his bag of tricks. Here is what the judges had to say about the overall showing that night:
Women:
1. Kelly Clark 45.2
2. Hannah Teter 44.8
3. Ellery Hollingsworth 43.6
Men:
1. Shaun White 49.0
2. Scotty Lago 47.7
3. Greg Bretz 46.7
Just before White and Clark were declared pipe king and queen once again, Park City Mountain Resort was honored to unveil the 2010 Olympic commemorative stamp. Because who doesn’t love stamps, you know the ones you use to mail things?

Day 2 was no less exciting with the Burton Super Demo Tour, X-box Junior Jam, Sprint Grand Prix Finals, a free Concert by 30 Seconds to Mars and of course the 2010 Winter Games U.S. Halfpipe Team Announcement.  I’m exhausted all over again just writing it.
The Junior Jam was ill with tons of little rippers throwing down on a mini rail jam set up.  Park City Snowboard Team’s Gabe McGovern and Anna Miller both took home first place prizes, including an Xbox and a free camp session at High Cascade this summer. Coming in second and third for the boys was Team Utah Park City’s Jacob Hunsaker and Matt Grant; for the girls Park City Snowboard Team members Shay Coghlan and Delaney Coghlan. They left with more shwagg and prizes from Xbox than you can shake a stick at.
Saturday’s  Sprint US Snowboarding Grand Prix was the main attraction of the weekend for good reason.  Thousands of people trekked into the snow to see the Olympic hopefuls perform and no one left disappointed. Olympic vet, Shaun White put down a run of epic proportions that forced a 49.5 out of the judges. Later White was quoted saying “There is always room for improvement. The judges haven’t given a perfect score yet, but I’m going to get it.” Personally, I would be pleased with the 49.5, there’s nothing wrong with rounding up. In the same pipe where she earned her first Olympic Gold medal, Kelly Clark boosted a front-side 9 earning a 47.4 in her first run of finals. Comfortable with that score, Clark was able to take her second run as a victory lap.

After the competition, the masses migrated to the Bud Light stage where Thirty Seconds to Mars rocked out, getting the crowd stoked for the US Olympic  Halfpipe Team announcement.
As many expected, Shaun White and Kelly Clark head-lined the team. Utah local, Louie Vito waltzed his way onto the team to represent the US for the first time along-side first time Olympian Scotty Lago. The 2006 Gold and Silver medalists, Hannah Teter and Gretchen Bleiler made up the rest of the team. The athletes were stoked, as they should be, even the Olympic veterans were giddy with excitement.  First timer, Lago had this to say about the experience, "I'm still in shock right now. Obviously, it's been a huge goal of mine for the last couple seasons to make the team, and to realize that I just did it, so many things are going through my head."

Kings Crown Opening and Sprint US Snowboarding Grand Prix

The much anticipated King’s Crown opening was Monday,  January 11, 2010.  This famous world class terrain park opened with a 45’, 55’ and 70’ triple jump line, with a video game influenced upper portion and a “thicket” jump incorporated in the trees.

Utah’s best came out of the woodwork yesterday to throw down on jumps so big they make snowcats look like toys.  PC Allstar Tom Wallisch had this to say about the new and improved King’s Crown, “It’s a really fun and creative park with tons of options.”
 
If boosting thickets and jibbing wall rides taller than your house isn’t in your near future come on over and check it out anyway, snowboarding and skiing are both spectator sports after all.

The Park City Mountain Resort event of the year, The Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix, is just around the corner (January 22-24, 2010) and that means lots of wonderful things for you.  Including watching some of the top pros in snowboarding boost out of the pipe under the lights!

Unfortunately to put on this colossal event PC has to close down parts of the mountain to riders including the Eagle Superpipe beginning Saturday, January 16th, Pick’n Shovel Terrain Park and Three Kings’ Chair will close beginning Monday, January 18th.  The park and pipe will reopen a few days after the event for a mid-season overhaul.
