Park City welcomes recent X Games Skier Halfpipe Finalists

As I briefly mentioned in my last post, next week we are excited to welcome the Visa Freestlye International World Cup to Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort.  After watching the skiers go big in the X Games the last few days, I can say I am now even more excited.  Here is a comparision on how the X Games Skier Halfpipe ended up and who we will be expecting here at the Eagle Superpipe next week.   I'll start with ladies, because ladies first, right?

If you were unable to watch these athletes, live and in person at the X Games be sure and check them out right here at Park City Mountain Resort next Saturday (1/31).  The competition is scheduled to kick off at 9:30 a.m.

Thursday, the event kicks off with a free concert from Michael Franti and Spearhead on Lower Main Street in Park City.  The entertainment goes from 7:00 - 9:00 and will be followed by fireworks! 

Deer Valley will moguls, aerials and dual moguls Thursday - Saturday.  It is a freestyle skier extravaganza!

Inaugurating Jonesy's , King of the Wasatch and World Cup action

Yesterday was a big day at Park City Mountain Resort!  Upper Jonesy's opened to the public with 17 jib and jump features.  Our terrain parks are now completely open for the season!  This season Jim and the rest of the park crew have done an awesome job getting tons of features open for all ability levels.  If you haven't checked out the parks yet this season now is a great time to get jibby.

Now that the crew has opened all the parks it's time to kick off our event scheudule.  This Friday and Saturday (1/23 and 1/24) we'll be hosting the King of the Wasatch with the Park City Snowboard Team and the Intermountain Snowboard Series.  The King of the Wasatch is a pipe and slopestyle competition open to USASA members.  Check out our events calendar (www.pcride.com)  for details on the competition and how to sign up!  There is a cash prize for winners of the open divisions! 

Immediately following the King of the Wasatch we kick into Visa Freestyle International World Cup gear.  Skier halfpipe World Cup that is!  We are hosting this event in partnership with Deer Valley Resort and the Visa Freestyle International World Cup that also includes Moguls, Dual Moguls and Aerials.  This is the first skier halfpipe World Cup in the states!  The confirmed (subject to change) athlete list that we've received at this point includes some of the top name skiers out there including Simon Dumont, Colby West, JP Solberg, Jen Hudak, etc!  The halfpipe competition takes place on Saturday, 1/31 beginning at 9:30 a.m. More details are available at pcride.com including info on the Free Michael Franti and Spearhead concert on Lower Main Street Thursday evening.

The weekend following the World Cup weekend we will be hosting the Burton Super Demo Tour and Am Series.  I'll get more details on that in the coming weeks.  Seeing as how I'm the events manager here, I think I need a nap....and this hasn't even started!

What is up!!!

Today's bluebird day reminded me more of March than January, the temperatures were pretty mild.  It was one of those perfect park days, the ones you usually dream about until March or early April.  As you know, King's Crown opened last week.  I know all of you read Matt's post on how to Smart Style it, if you didn't read it yet, do it now.  The only thing left at this point is upper Jonesy's.  Thanks park crew for all of your hard work so far!  Now that the mountain and parks are open it's time to get your shred on!  Well, your shred on and of course checking out of the events we have planned for the next few weeks.

In Sundance fashion, we are very excited for our own film, "I Ride Park City" to be one of 30 films chosen to be a part of the X-Dance Film Festival.  There will be an "I Ride Park City" screening Friday, January 16 at 6:00 p.m.  The screening will be at Off Broadway Theatre in SLC (272 S. Main St).  Tickets can be purchased at www.x-dance.com and are between $5 and $7.  Athletes from the film will be in attendance.  If you haven't seen "I Ride Park City" yet, here is your chance.  You can also purchase the film at www.pcride.com or at the resort.

Easy Does It

Yesterday I wrote a post announcing that the King's Crown Terrain Park was now open.  It begins with an up/down triangle rail and flows into four very large jumps.  These are followed up by a staircase feature with a down rail on one side and a down-flat-down rail on the other side. 

We got a couple of inches of snowfall overnight so my run through was just to check it all out, which I would have done anyways because I wanted to 'easy style it' as my first run in the Crown.  We got a comment yesterday from a rider who said he saw plenty of other riders hucking jumps right away and casting themselves.  It made me wonder if everyone who's riding is familiar with SMART STYLE and knows the four main points: 

   

1. Make a Plan  

2. Look Before You Leap 

3. Easy Style It

4.  Respect Gets Respect

These are rules that everyone riding the parks should follow, they can help you avoid an injury, ruin your season or worse .  Review the smartstyle rules if you aren't familiar, check out www.terrainparksafety.org for expanded information on SMART STYLE.  The site also has a video that's pretty good too. 

Get out there and ride, but familiarize yourself with park etiquette and safety, and have a great season.

King's Crown Terrain Park

I just got word from the terrain park crew that King's Crown opened today.  They built four jumps - 50, 45, 45 and 60 feet in length and opened up the staircase jib feature.  I haven't had a chance to get up and check it out, but am planning on taking a run through the park tomorrow and will take a few photos for another update.  

The guys are going to add six more jib features to the run in the next week or so.  Be sure to come up and check out the jumps - you can probably spot them anywhere in town actually, as well as the staircase.....it's big.

Terrain / Mountain Update

2009 is here and so far bringing great things!  Yesterday, Matt and I were planning on doing some "product testing" after lunch.  Right as we were walking out the door we got word that Jupiter was scheduled to open in 30 minutes.  The addition of Crescent Chair makes naviagating PCMR SOOOO much easier, and we were at Jupiter in no time (note - it is very easy to get to Pioneer from the top of Crescent even on a snowboard).  Our first couple of laps on Jupiter were great!  Fun snow and very few people made a great start to the New Year (and getting my powder legs back).  Here is a shot from the chairlift, unfortunately we were having too much fun riding to stop and take shots, sorry! 

 

 

Park Updates

We are still blowing mounds of snow in Kings Crown, and the park groomers have been out and about for a few days moving things around.  I haven't heard any updated targeted opening dates, but we'll post an update as soon as we have details.  On our way down from Jupiter we stopped by Jonesy's.  It looked like everyone was having an awesome time hiking the jib features as well as getting some practice on some of the smaller jumps.  If you are new to park riding Jonesy's looks to be the place to get your jib on!

Pick'n Shovel and the Eagle Superpipe are also super fun right now with bigger features.
